Many people, including Christians, struggle to understand who the Holy Spirit is. The Bible teaches many things about him that are important for us to know.
Click on the boxes below to see where the following things are taught in the Bible.
In summary, God, a personal being, now lives with you as the Holy Spirit. You will never be alone again.
“For it seemed good to the Holy Spirit and to us to lay no greater burden on you than these few requirements.”
Acts 15:28
“Brothers,” he said, “the Scriptures had to be fulfilled concerning Judas, who guided those who arrested Jesus. This was predicted long ago by the Holy Spirit, speaking through King David.”
Acts 1:16
“And do not bring sorrow to God’s Holy Spirit by the way you live. Remember, he has identified you as his own, guaranteeing that you will be saved on the day of redemption.”
Ephesians 4:30
“It is the one and only Spirit who distributes all these gifts. He alone decides which gift each person should have.”
1 Corinthians 12:11
When we consider all these things are true of the Holy Spirit, we see that he is not a thing or a force, but a person.
“In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth. The earth was formless and empty, and darkness covered the deep waters. And the Spirit of God was hovering over the surface of the waters.”
Genesis 1:1-2
“For the Lord is the Spirit, and wherever the Spirit of the Lord is, there is freedom.”
2 Corinthians 3:17
“Then Peter said, ‘Ananias, why have you let Satan fill your heart? You lied to the Holy Spirit, and you kept some of the money for yourself. The property was yours to sell or not sell, as you wished. And after selling it, the money was also yours to give away. How could you do a thing like this? You weren’t lying to us but to God!’”
Acts 5:3-4
“…go and make disciples of all the nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and the Son and the Holy Spirit.”
Matthew 28:19
The Bible tells us the Holy Spirit is God’s Spirit. It tells us he’s the Lord—a term used for Jesus and God. His name is used interchangeably with God by Peter the apostle. And he’s honoured alongside the Father and Son in a Christian’s baptism. The Bible clearly teaches us that the Holy Spirit is God.
“And now you Gentiles have also heard the truth, the Good News that God saves you. And when you believed in Christ, he identified you as his own by giving you the Holy Spirit, whom he promised long ago.”
Ephesians 1:13
“But you are not controlled by your sinful nature. You are controlled by the Spirit if you have the Spirit of God living in you. (And remember that those who do not have the Spirit of Christ living in them do not belong to him at all.)”
Romans 8:9
The Holy Spirit is a key component of what makes someone a Christian. All those who believe in Jesus receive the Holy Spirit.
