Spiritual Breathing Analogy

Spiritual breathing is a helpful analogy for us. We want to depend upon the Holy Spirit moment by moment for his power in our lives just as we depend upon oxygen to keep us alive.

As you look at what it means to ‘exhale’ and ‘inhale’, you’ll recognise aspects of confession and repentance from our earlier conversations. We want you to see how these relate to dependence on the Holy Spirit.

Exhale

“But if we confess our sin to him, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sin and cleanse us from all wickedness.” – 1 John 1:9

Exhaling involves two parts:

  • Firstly, agreeing with God about our sin and acknowledging it to him.
  • Secondly, thanking God that he has already forgiven us.
Inhale

“Don’t be drunk with wine, because that will ruin your life. Instead, be filled with the Holy Spirit.” Ephesians 5:18

Inhaling involves two parts:

  • Firstly, surrendering control of your life back to Christ (i.e. choose to stop getting drunk).
  • Secondly, ask the Holy Spirit to fill you with his power to turn from that sin (once again in this instance, getting drunk).
Faith

“And we are confident that he hears us whenever we ask for anything that pleases him. And since we know he hears us when we make our requests, we also know that he will give us what we ask for.” – 1 John 5:14-15

Faith is important in Spiritual Breathing.

  • Firstly, we must believe it is God’s will for us to be filled with the Spirit.
  • Secondly, we must believe that when we ask God to fill us with his Spirit, he will.
