The Cost of Discipleship

Read Luke 14:25-33.

  • If we are to be disciples of Jesus, what does this passage teach us about our priorities?
  • What could it cost you to be a disciple of Jesus? How do you feel about that?

Baptism is a representation of our lives as disciples. The beginning of our journey with Jesus is marked by a death to our old sinful self. That is an on-going daily battle for all of us who follow him. We’ve learnt this in Follow already. In baptism, that’s us going down into the water.

The other side of baptism is us coming out of the water. This symbolises the new resurrected life we receive though the Spirit as Jesus brings us back to life. There is great reward for those of us who follow Jesus. Jesus says it like this:

“Unless a grain of wheat falls to the ground and dies, it remains alone; but if it dies, it produces much grain. He who loves his life will lose it, and he who hates his life in this world will keep it for eternal life.”
