Commitment to Pray

Read the following prayer requests from Paul.

“Devote yourselves to prayer, being watchful and thankful. And pray for us, too, that God may open a door for our message, so that we may proclaim the mystery of Christ, for which I am in chains. Pray that I may proclaim it clearly, as I should.”

“And pray in the Spirit on all occasions with all kinds of prayers and requests. With this in mind, be alert and always keep on praying for all the saints. Pray also for me, that whenever I open my mouth, words may be given me so that I will fearlessly make known the mystery of the gospel, for which I am an ambassador in chains. Pray that I may declare it fearlessly, as I should.”

“Finally, brothers, pray for us that the message of the Lord may spread rapidly and be honoured, just as it was with you.”

(If you are doing this as a group, split into pairs for this discussion.)

  • What consistent themes do you see in Paul’s prayer requests?
  • In light of these verses, what ways can you be praying for your friends?
  • Share with one another the significance of prayer in our own lives. How much time do we spend praying for God to help us share our faith with others?

Most Christians are not satisfied with their commitment to prayer. Most of us agree how important prayer is. Yet very few of us spend much time praying. If we are to be effective in sharing our faith with others, prayer is the right place to begin. We must become both committed to prayer and intentional in our prayers for opportunities to share with the lost people in our lives.
