Confess

It’s inevitable that we will sin as Christians. The question is how we will respond to the sin in our lives.

Read 1 John 1:5-10.

  • In this passage, choosing to be in darkness is equated with hiding our sin. What might motivate someone to do that?
  • How do you respond to failure, guilt and shame? Do you hide it from others or do you let people see it?
  • People who choose to live in the light don’t hide their sin. What does verse 9 say is true if we confess our sins?
  • It’s important to remember why we can be forgiven. What does verse 7 say cleanses us from our sin?

Even though we have been completely forgiven of our sin because Jesus died for us, sin can stunt our growth as Christians. Because of this, confessing our sin and turning away from it (repentance) is an essential habit to get into.

Coming Into the Light

Confession involves acknowledging areas we’ve failed to love God and others. When we confess, we call out our sin for what it is instead of denying, justifying, or blaming it on someone else. We choose to agree with God’s perspective on it.

Imagine you’re driving to a new destination and you find yourself off course. Admitting that you’re lost is like confession. But to reach your desired destination, you still need to readjust your course. This is where repentance comes in.
